Thomas Miller, MSW, CSWA

Hi, I’m Thomas!

I am a Clinical Social Work Associate (CSWA) with experience in community mental health, including youth and group facilitation. I work with whole people and families, not just symptoms. My goal is always to support my clients develop the awareness and skills that will help them thrive in their lives long after therapy ends. I always aim to first of all embody and help my clients experience the unconditional positive regard, presence and openness to new possibilities that support my clients to change themselves, their relationships and life courses in the ways that benefit them most.

The Professional Stuff

I gained my Masters of Clinical Social Work from the University of Michigan. I’ve since worked in both private practice and community health settings. I bring particularly deep experience with Complex and simple PTSD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, suicidal ideation and psychosis. My own interest in therapy began with trauma healing after military deployments. Living and working for 8 years in a community in Scotland after my time in the Army, I gained a lot of experience facilitating groups, working one on one with participants and community members from around the world and facilitating all the emergent, messy, usually non-linear processes that communities (and families) bring up.

I emphasize neurobiologically-informed skills and perspective in all my work, including supporting clients to deepen key practices of self-regulation and somatic awareness. The major therapeutic models I practice include Somatic Therapy, Trauma Narrative Reintegration, Family Systems Therapy, DBT and Internal Family Systems-inspired techniques.

The Personal Stuff

I love traveling and learning languages. I speak Spanish fluently, and Brazilian Portuguese and Italian less fluently. Currently, when I’m not working I enjoy hiking, reading, playing the mandolin, writing fiction, meditating and spending time with my partner Amanda, our sweet dog and cat, and also our other, grumpy cat.
